Hardware
For the publisher's 7.2 GB Ollama text package at a short 4K context, we estimate at least 12 GB GPU memory or 16 GB Apple unified memory. For a more comfortable starting point, use 16 GB GPU memory or 24 GB unified memory. These are capacity estimates, not speed tests; longer context and other apps need additional headroom.

THE WORKFLOW

Set up Gemma 4 · E2B on your machine

Pick your operating system. Every command below is for the selected package and runtime.

Install Ollama for this operating system before running the model command.

01

Confirm prerequisites

You need a Windows, macOS, or Linux machine with enough free memory to hold the Ollama package for Gemma 4 E2B. The package is listed as 7.2 GB. Keep several gigabytes free beyond that for context and output. Image or audio input requires separate memory validation, so begin with text-only chat.

02

Install Ollama

Install Ollama on your Windows, macOS, or Linux machine using the official installer from Ollama. After installation, make sure the ollama command is available in a new terminal session.

03

Run Gemma 4 E2B

Start the model. Ollama will download the model files if they are not already present, then open an interactive chat session in the terminal.

ollama run gemma4:e2b
04

Send your first prompt

At the interactive prompt, type a short private question and press Enter. For example: What can you help me with locally?

05

Confirm the model responds

Read the generated answer in the terminal. A successful check is a text response that directly addresses your question, not just an empty prompt or a download message.

SUCCESS CHECK · Gemma 4 · E2B

Check the first local reply

Ask a short question with a known answer. Confirm the selected local model responds and verify the answer yourself before using it for private work.

This is a source-linked setup, not a YouRunAI hardware test. Confirm your exact runtime version, package, and output before relying on it.

Back to setup steps

When it doesn’t go to plan

The ollama command is not recognized after installation.

Close and reopen your terminal session so the updated PATH is loaded, then try the run command again.

The model download fails or is interrupted.

Re-run the run command. Ollama resumes or restarts the download of the Gemma 4 E2B package.

You want image or audio input.

Validate memory usage separately before sending image or audio input. Start with text-only prompts to confirm the model is responding.
